Cultural cooperation is one of the main areas of the bilateral relations, with collaborations that cover the fields of archaeology, museums, music, languages and art.
The Italian archeological researches held in Oman represent one of the most traditional and relevant aspects of the bilateral cooperation, relating to excavations conducted by teams from the University of Bologna, Orientale of Naples, Sapienza of Rome and the University of Pisa, supported by contributions from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. In 2019, the 40th Anniversary of the Italian archeological missions was celebrated in the Sultanate of Oman with an exhibition located in the National Museum in Muscat and with a volume published by the Embassy.
The closeness to Italy is very strong also in the music sector: the Royal Opera House Muscat represents the most important theatre in the Middle-East and over the years many collaborations with Italian theatres, including the Rossini Opera Festival of Pesaro and the Teatro Massimo of Palermo, were developed under the guidance of the Italian Director General, Umberto Fanni.
The Italian language is currently taught at Sultan Qaboos University by Professor Caterina Mirasolo, lecturer since January 2021.
