ITALIAN VISA FOR FAMILY REUNION
a) Family members of Italian or EU citizens
If you are a relative of an Italian or EU citizen having permanent residence in Italy, you may be eligible to apply for an Italian visa for family reunion. Please refer to this checklist for the required documents to be provided.
Who can apply:
- Spouse of an Italian or EU citizen having permanent residence in Italy, unless legally separated or under 18 years of age.
- Partner of an Italian or EU citizen with permanent residence in Italy, who has legally contracted a registered union with the latter under the legislation of an EU Member State treating it as equivalent to marriage.
- Children of an Italian or EU citizen with permanent residence in Italy, or of their spouse or partner, who are under 21 years of age as of the date of application, including children born out of wedlock and adopted children. For children under 18 years of age, consent of the other parent is required.
- Children as defined above who are older than 21 years of age and are economically dependent on the Italian/EU citizen for their basic sustenance.
- Minors under the Italian/EU citizen’s guardianship or permanent care, or that of their spouse or partner, subject to the same criteria for children.
- Parents or adopters of the Italian/EU citizen or their spouse/partner, who are economically dependent on them.
Important: If you are a family member of an Italian/EU citizen, you may not be eligible for an Italian visa for family reunion if your planned stay in Italy is shorter than 3 months. A free-of-charge visa for tourism – visit to family members will be issued instead.
Relatives of Italian/EU citizens other than those listed above will be charged the regular fee for the issuance of a visa for tourism – visit to family members. See “Visa for tourism – visit to family member” for more information.
Required documents:
- Duly filled application form;
- Passport-size photo no older than 6 months, full front and with white background;
- Valid passport or other travel document;
- Visa applicant’s cover letter;
- Proof of family relationship with an Italian/EU citizen with permanent residence in Italy (certificate of marriage, civil union, birth, parenthood, or adoption):
- Certificates issued by a foreign authority must be translated in either English or Italian and be duly legalized;
- Certificates issued by a Schengen country will be accepted only if multilingual, otherwise see 1.;
- For applicants who are the spouse or partner of an Italian citizen registered at AIRE and whose marriage certificate has been duly registered at the competent Consulate General of Italy, the certificate of marriage referred at letter “e” is not required. A self-declaration by the Italian citizen stating that they are married to the applicant is sufficient.
- Copy of the Italian/EU citizen’s passport or other valid ID document;
- Declaration by the Italian/EU citizen stating that the applicant’s main purpose for travelling to Italy is to reunite with them.
- For economically dependent children/parents only: proof of a regular transfer of funds from the Italian/EU relative’s account to the applicant, of sufficient amount to cover this latter’s basic needs.
For all abovementioned documents, the original and a copy must be provided (except for f.).

Please notice that your passport will be kept at the Italian Embassy and returned you upon completion of the procedure.
The Italian visa for family reunion is provided free of charge.
The visa will have a duration of 365 days upon your arrival in Italy and will allow for multiple entrance.
Within 8 days since your arrival to Italy, you are requested to apply for an Italian Residence Permit for family reasons by filling in the module available at any Post Office in the country.
b) Family members of non-Italian/EU citizens
Family members of non-Italian/EU citizens are entitled to family reunion with a relative regularly residing in Italy, upon issuance of a no-impediment (“nulla osta”) certificate by the competent Italian authorities.
Who can apply:
- Spouse of the non-EU citizen having permanent residence in Italy, unless legally separated or under 18 years of age.
- Children of the non-EU citizen with permanent residence in Italy, or of their spouse or partner, who are under 18 years of age as of the date of application, including children born out of wedlock and adopted children, provided that the other parent has given their consent.
- Children as defined above who are older than 18 years of age and are economically dependent on the non-EU citizen for their basic sustenance.
- Minors under the non-EU citizen’s guardianship or permanent care, or that of their spouse or partner, subject to the same criteria for children.
- Parents or adopters of the non-EU citizen or their spouse/partner, who are economically dependent on them.
